Fall Porch Refresh
It’s amazing what a little paint and some time can create. I wanted to have a fall refresh for our porch space. I have slowly been migrating our décor to more simple and cohesive color palette so that I can easily transition from one season to another or one holiday to the next.
I decided for fall I would focus on something that would work for both Halloween and Thanksgiving so I could set it and leave it up until I switch out for Holidays/New Year. Pumpkins for me was the easiest décor piece that works for both fall holidays. But I did not care for the orange tones even though I love the fall leaves changing and the color it brings. I decided on a white, grey and black color scheme.
My first project for the fall porch refresh was to paint my orange pumpkins. I had a few from previous years but I picked up some more. I will share the links to items used at the end of my post, along with all paint colors. I picked up a new rug for the porch space to add some of the grey color for a base and to make it feel cozier. On top of painting the pumpkins I also painted the pots I was going to use. I already had my pots but I liked some similar ones at the bottom of this post. I added some white mums I picked up at the local greenery when they were buy one get one 50% off. In the taller pots I spray painted some greenery branches with black spray paint. I really like the ombre effect it gave with the green and black.
I had also been thinking about painting our porch roof insert for some time and decided now was the time. I used my color reader tool to find color options that would work with the rug to tie it together. I have disliked our front door ever since we moved here and we plan to replace it but I thought if we are planning to replace it why not paint it first to give it new life. Before I jumped into painting it, I took a picture and I mocked up what it would look like painted black using the paint app on my computer. Once I saw it black, I knew I was painting the door. The wood was a harder sell for my husband so I just painted the storm door. But I had a plan to cover up some of the wood.
While I had the black paint out to paint the front door I decided to also paint our house numbers. We have been told they were hard to see from the road. I figured if it didn’t turn out I could always replace them. I absolutely love them. They stand out more, look more modern and I can’t believe I waited so long to paint them.
As I mentioned I had a plan to cover some of the wood by the front door. When we went for walks through the neighborhood I would see all the cute fall signs so I looked into getting one. The one I really liked was not big enough for the space so I used it as inspiration to make my own sign. What I love about this fall sign is not only is it custom built for my door but I can make it two sided. I’m already planning to do a winter/holiday phrase on the other side. I plan to do a separate blog post about the DIY Fall Sign. I’ll link here when I have it live on the blog.
With all these elements cohesively put together with a defined color palette it looks meant to be together. The best part is after Halloween I only have to take down the bats and the carved pumpkin faces and it still works for Thanksgiving decor. I can leave it all up until I put together my winter holiday decor.
The most time consuming part was painting the pumpkins as they needed several coats to cover the orange. So if you wanted you could just grab already colored pumpkins in the shade you are going for with your design. I liked some plain white and black pumpkins. Some are on sale so you could purchase items to add for next year.
I really love how my fall porch refresh turned out. I wish I would have done some of these pieces sooner but better late than never. If you do a fall porch refresh I would love to see it, tag me over on Instagram @aneventcalledlife.
Happy Fall!

Item details with links
- The rug is what started this porch refresh so I have to share the link to it first. It is a 6′ x 6′ square grey outdoor rug
- I used the Rust-Oleum brand paint for painting the pumpkins. The grey color is charcoal, the white is linen white and the black used on the door is Gloss Black. Spray paint used for the taller black pots was Krylon Matte Black.
- Some of the pumpkins were ones I already had on hand that were orange that I painted but I did pick up a few more to paint so if you wanted to DIY your own colored pumpkins here are some options from Amazon and Target.
- If painting pumpkins is not your thing, here are some options for colored pumpkins at Michaels that I also picked up to fill in more. They have varying sizes in black and white pumpkins.
- The inspiration for my DIY Hello Pumpkin fall sign was from Hobby Lobby and is linked here if you don’t want to DIY one.
